Freekee Deakee 7″ EP
Tomothy Records, 2021
Here’s a fun little 4-track EP featuring an A-side with 3 tracks, under 2 minutes each, full of warbly synthpunk damage, carried by excellent vocals that sound like they could be coming from a craggy, possessed cousin of Jay Reatard. The first track “Haha” starts out with a jerky synth riff that almost goes into Xerobot-style no wave territory, but eventually it gets bent into more of a freakish rawk-n-roll tune with a garage punk vibe that carries through the other two tracks on this side of the record, making it feel more like an Angry Angles/Reatards kind of punk skronk. The B-side slows things waaaay down with a song called “Freakee Friday” that is pretty much the Butthole Surfers’ bass riff from “22 Going On 23” off the Locust Abortion Technician album with dueling psychedelic guitars orbiting around it, played across nearly 4 minutes of foggy haze with lyrics dealing with the profound dilemma of being too stoned to feed one’s self. Sounds like something Gibby Haynes might endorse, or perhaps recommend along with a fistful of hallucinogens. Regardless of chemical intake, the gnarly, rough-hewn edge to the tracks on this EP by these fine young lads from Los Angeles makes for a freaky fine soundtrack for staring off into space and/or wigging out to. What more can you ask for from a 7″ slab of vinyl?
