Yes, Noise for Zeros finally got a proper update, after many, many, many years of band-aid fixes and subtle refreshes. In case you ever wondered about the banners from the old site, you might get a kick out of the stories behind the photos. And if you’re a new visitor, you may get a better idea of what universe these irregular transmissions are coming from. All 3 were photographed by yours truly at Gabe’s Oasis in Iowa City, throughout 1994.
Version 1 – godheadSilo
I recall this being one of the loudest shows I’d ever seen, making it an obvious choice the initial site design. My ears still ring from that show and I’m still amazed at the rumbling racket these two unassuming BMXers from Fargo, North Dakota could whip up.
Version 2 – Dazzling Killmen
I’d heard a lot about St. Louis’ Killmen from legendary shows they’d played in KC and finally had a chance to witness them as they toured in support of their Face of Collapse album. Bassist Darin Gray played with an intensity seldom seen, at one point dropping his instrument down so that he could jump off stage and pummel a drunk who couldn’t stop knocking into the headstock of his bass.
Version 3 – Cows
Even though it’s hard to make it out in this fuzzy alcohol-smeared snap (not to mention shoddy film developing — remember that stuff, film?), singer Shannon Selberg was sporting stirrups, a jockstrap with a blinky doll head, and a bra made of shaving cream during this particular performance. Classic Cows.
